White Elephant gift exchange rules (a.k.a. Dirty Santa rules)
Numbers, gifts, a little friendly stealing. Here's how to run it in five minutes, plus house rules that keep it fun.
White Elephant, Dirty Santa, Yankee Swap: same game, different names. Everyone brings one wrapped gift, and everyone goes home with one. The fun is in the stealing.
There's no official rulebook. These are common party conventions, so pick the house rules that fit your crowd and announce them before the first gift gets opened.

Before the party
- Set a spending limit and share it with the invite.
- Ask everyone to wrap their gift so nobody can guess what's inside.
- Cut numbered slips, one per player, and put them in a bowl or hat.
- Decide your steal rules now. Changing them mid-game starts arguments.
The classic Dirty Santa rules
- Draw numbers. Each player draws a slip. That's their turn order.
- Player 1 opens a gift. They pick any wrapped gift from the pile and open it so everyone can see.
- Everyone after that chooses: open or steal. On your turn, open a new wrapped gift, or steal any gift that's already been opened.
- If your gift gets stolen, you can open a new gift or steal a different one. Then play goes back to the next number.
- Last turn goes to player 1. Once every gift is open, the first player gets one chance to swap with anyone (if the gift isn't frozen). That makes up for going first with nothing to steal.
Steal limits (house-rule options)
Without limits, one great gift can bounce around forever. Pick one or two of these:
- Frozen after three steals. Once a gift has been stolen three times, it stays with whoever holds it. Two steals works for a short game.
- No immediate steal-backs. If your gift is stolen, you can't take it right back on the same turn.
- One steal per turn. Each turn allows a single steal, then the person who lost their gift has to open a new one.
- Time cap. Give each turn about 30 seconds so nobody stalls.
Popular White Elephant game ideas and twists
- Theme it. "Something cozy," "under $10 snacks," or "best gag gift" makes shopping easier.
- Dice rolls. Roll a die each turn: 1โ2 open, 3โ4 steal, 5โ6 your choice.
- Mystery swap at the end. After the last gift is open, read a short story and pass gifts left or right on cue. Whatever you're holding when it ends is yours.
- Wrap-in-wrap. Hide small gifts in layers of wrapping or boxes for extra laughs during unwrapping.
- Gag gift round. Run a separate pile just for silly gifts, then a regular round for real ones.
The "everyone gets something good" variant
Great for families, coworkers, or anyone who'd rather not leave with a joke gift.
- Ask for a useful gift that most people would actually enjoy. No gag gifts.
- Cap steals at two per gift so the good stuff settles fast.
- At the end, allow any two people to trade if they both agree.
- Have a couple of spare gifts (gift cards or treats) on hand for no-shows or late arrivals.
A quick game timeline
- 0:00 Setup: Pile the gifts, pass out numbers, read the house rules out loud.
- 0:05 Play: Go in number order: open or steal.
- 0:35 Final swap: Player 1 gets the last chance to steal.
- 0:40 Wrap up: Optional mutual trades, photos with the best gift, done.
Host tips
- Plan on about a minute per player. Over 20 players? Split into two groups.
- Keep gifts work-appropriate or family-friendly, depending on the crowd.
- Make stealing playful, not personal. A quick laugh beats a long debate.
That's it. Print the rules, set the limit, and let the stealing begin.
